Briefcases are functional, stylish, and classic when it comes to choosing a 9-to-5 style briefcase, but somehow they are often overlooked. Once in the hands of every industrialist, the hard-line briefcase fell out of favor at the turn of the century thanks to the relaxation of dress codes and the rise of business casual. Now, however, it is being followed by brands from high street to high-end, and thanks to a fresh approach to design and modern materials like soft leather and waterproof canvas, people can now carry a briefcase without looking stiff. The origins of the briefcase can be traced back to the 14th century, when earlier versions were made of cloth to carry money and valuables. But the traditional briefcase didn't take shape until the 1820s, when Parisian manufacturer Godillot produced a carpet bag with an iron frame.
